Yesterday’s story. I finished my meeting just after Asar prayers and me and my buddy took some bubur (porridge) back to his car.
As we were putting the porridge at the back of the car, an old Indian man was passing by with a big gunny sack bag collecting tin cans and recycled items in exchange for cash. He asked us what is that? Without hesitation, my friend offered him a bowl after explaining its just porridge. He blinks and took one bowl. You should see his face is smiling and the way he was holding the bowl looks like a gift of pot of gold. Then off he went. Hurriedly.
My friend felt uneasy and asked if we could tail him from behind. That is what we did.
We reached a single story house. He went into the gate. The wife is on a reclining chair sitting outside. He bid his wife. Took a wet towel and wipe her hand and her face, took a spoon, open the bowl and feed her the porridge. Slowly, just like a baby to his beloved wife. His wife sip slowly and smile. He asked a question. She nodded.
We both looked at one another and cried. I was certainly not expecting this. My friend wish to go out and see them. I suggest we wait till she is done.
My friend took another bowl from the car. He went to see both of them and passed the bowl and cash. They chat a little.
The wife had a stroke and needs constant care. He used to work but not anymore. He just do what he can. No children. He cried receiving the gift. And this is what he said:
“Tak pernah ada orang melayu datang rumah saya”
If I cud cry some more, I would.
As we head back, my dear friend just text me this via fb messenger “Sampai hari ni aku teringat jasa ko untuk buat baik pada sesiapapun. Uncle ni India, dia siap cakap, selama dia hidup bertahun2 ini kali pertama ada budak melayu datang rumah dan beri dia makanan dan duit. Aku terus teringat ko.
Banyak ko mengispirasi. Terima kasih banyak-banyak! Aku akan usaha beri lagi dan lagi!”
To me, I am just a typist. A small lamb.
